Mbulelo Mandlana faces charges of genocide and crimes against humanity
The president of SASCO, Mbulelo Mandlana, will be investigated by the International Criminal Court for genocide and crimes against humanity. According to Fanie van der Walt of F & F Attorneys, posters with the words “One boer, one bullet” were recently erected across the campuses of several local universities.
“The universities include University of Pretoria, North West University, and Tshwane University of Tehnology…According to the Rome Statute the incitement constitutes the crime of genocide itself,” he says.
Mandlana is the thirteenth person among a group of twelve officials, which include President Jacob Zuma and ANC Youth League president Julius Malema, who face the same charges. The charges were filed in June this year by an anonymous complainant represented by van der Walt.
Van der Walt says that the Court’s prosecutors are currently investigating the case. “We received a letter from the chief prosecutor confirming that they were seriously investigating … and they will soonest revert to us in this regard,” he says.
Lazola Ndamase, general Secretary of Sasco, says they are not aware of the charges against Mandlana. “Actually it is the first time. I thought you were joking when you told me there are charges against Sasco president that will be at the International Criminal Court,” he says.
Ndamase has denied allegations that the posters were erected by Sasco.” We received an open letter from the chairperson of Afriforum Youth with a copy of the poster attached to the letter,” he says.
He says that when they saw the poster they did not believe that people would believe that they were erected by their party. “For one, our structures have nothing to do with Julius Malema, and in that poster there is something about Julius Malema. Secondly, some of the things written in that poster are ridiculous. Actually we believe that whoever printed the poster was having an anti-Sasco campaign,” he says
Ndamase says they are not intimidated by the charges. “Even if we are to be taken to any court for it we would go and explain our position,” he says.
